Mappy Monday ~ Railroad Maps

taken at the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore, Maryland

On the Library of Congress site you will find a wonderful collection of railroad maps dating from 1828-1900. Just a few of the maps available are Virginia railroad maps, mid-west railroad land grant maps and the Continental Railway. The site describes the collection as the following :

"The Railroad maps represents an important historical record, illustrating the growth of travel and settlement as well as the development of industry and agriculture in the United States. They depict the development of cartographic style and technique, highlighting the achievement of early railroaders. Included in the collection are progress report surveys for individual lines, official government surveys, promotional maps, maps showing land grants and right-of-way, and route guides published by commercial firms."

All aboard!
