Genealogy Blogging IS Cousin Bait!

When I began this genealogy adventure the goal was to share ancestral discoveries with family members. Slowly the realization dawned it was also a very useful tool to connect with the wider community.

I have written several posts sharing how "cousins" of all sorts found their way to this blog. Each time it makes my heart skip to see one of these new friends post a comment.

One such post is last year's Surprise Connection - Hello, Cousin! Here is where I shared discovering a fellow GeneaBlogger was related to my husband.

Since then three researchers have stopped by to say hello and share their connection to my husband's 9th great-grandfather, Comfort Starr! Can you see me jumping up and down with expression of profound glee?!

Many times I read blog posts about the importance of sharing your family history. Meeting and forming bonds with distant cousins across the globe has been one surprising bonus.

This experience has me contemplating beginning a new blog "Are YOU related to Comfort Starr?" You never know who is researching your ancestor in a database. Would it be wonderful if your blog came up in their hit list?

Throw out the cousin bait, and wait for nibbles!

  2. Hi! It's me, the Canadian cousin. :) I love your idea for a Comfort blog. It's so interesting to find distant relations from all over the globe. I became interested in our family tree after my brother (pre internet research days!) researched the Starr family. The Starrs are a very interesting group! Keep up the great blog, I plan to stop in and visit quite often. :)

    1. Jaclyn,

Hello, my hubby's Canadian cousin! So glad you stopped by to chat. Indeed, the Starr's are very interesting. Each one presents a new discovery.

  3. Deb, I love how the GeneaBloggers site actually has a site-specific search button to help people find the blogs that mention their ancestors by name. Google itself now has a blog-specific search engine, too. Either way, no matter what you choose to title your blog, distant cousins well versed in the use of search engines will just keep showing up at your digital doorstep! Just keep educating everyone on the search--your forte--and those cousins will eventually find their way to you.
