Advent Calendar 2011 - Holiday Food: Chrusciki

Thinking about what food tradition to discuss a childhood memory came to mind.

One of my mother's dear friends was of Polish ancestry. Mrs. Betty introduced us to various types of interesting dishes and treats including chrusciki.

I must admit it took several years to learn how to pronounce this correctly, but that never stopped us from asking when she would be making another batch.

Several weeks before Christmas she would start the routine of gathering ingredients in preparation for days of marathon baking. Everyone in the neighborhood would wait with great anticipation for their very own batch.

One of my fondest memories was when Mrs. Betty invited me into the kitchen to help. There were gales of laughter especially after powder sugar hand prints covered every surface.

Follow this site for detailed information about chrusciki along with a recipe. This particular recipe calls for vodka or whiskey.

I would think Mrs. Betty left that ingredient out of her treats. Or perhaps those were the "adult" batch delivered to our parents after Christmas.
