Family Discovery on eBay

I have written about my husband's grandfather, Rev. Christian Wismer Ruth being a pastor for the Church of the Nazarene.

While researching we found he wrote a number of books throughout his ministry. In fact several volumes are available on GoogleBooks.

Last year I began searching eBay with hopes of acquiring several editions. We have been fortunate enough to locate and obtain three different titles.

Our recent acquisition is the book entitled "Temptations Peculiar to the Sanctified" published in 1928.

After placing a bid I crossed fingers, toes and eyes. What a wonderful feeling when we won. Another family treasure obtained from eBay.

The seller listed the book in very good condition with little wear. Since the book was paperback I was worried there was possible damage done over the years.

When the book arrived it was in excellent condition.

Upon opening the pages we discovered a wonderful surprise. There we found this previously unseen photograph of C.W. Ruth.

Don't forget to check eBay and other auction sites for possible family treasures.

You never know what you will find.

  3. How did you find this on e-Bay? Do you have a Google alert for this name, or was it just chance that you found this the day you logged onto e-Bay?

  5. I love searching on E-bay!!! Find things all the time. What I think is exciting about your find is that your Grandfather-in-law wrote books and you now will have them in your possession. It is like your Ancestor wants to be found.

Heather, yes I have set up several Google Alerts to capture any new items added to eBay. So far I have three books by C.W. Ruth.

  8. How wonderful! I'd heard about Ebay as a resource but just thought it was too wide a net. Now I see that's certainly not the case. Congrats!

  9. Fabulous. I'll join the line of "those who are absolutely jealous, but happy for you!". And Heather that's a great way to use Google Alerts.

  11. How fabulous. I have an eBay search saved for several family surnames. Everything listed with that surname is sent to me in an email. I have purchased several books written by or about several family members including a wonderful, wonderful scrapbook about one chap who was an MP. This scrapbook was his original book, with copies of newspaper cuttings featuring his political career. You can see examples on my blog -search for the name Bowring.

  12. Congratulations on a truly awesome find! I can only imagine how thrilled you were! My parents belonged to the Church of the Nazarene when I was a young child -- we then moved to an area that did not have a church of that denomination, but they still attended their old church occasionally. One thing I remember quite distinctly is the emphasis on "saved and sanctified." Sanctification is a basic belief of the Nazarenes, and it refers to the work of the Holy Spirit within a person's life, eliminating sins and impurities and creating a state of holiness, even on earth. It is entirely fitting that Pastor Ruth wrote a book on the subject. No doubt he had preached on sanctification many, many times.
