Several years ago my husband and I went on a three-week trek across the country. Each stop was carefully planed either for genealogical, historical or scenic significance.
We began with Phil in Punxsutawney, and ended in Boot Hill Cemetery, Dodge City. Along the route was a stop in Ohio to enjoy the state fair and visit several presidential gravesites.
There are five presidential burial sites in the Buckeye State. William Henry Harrison, James A. Garfield, Rutherford B. Hayes, William McKinley and Warren G. Harding.
During our two-day stay we were able to pay our respects to four of the five presidents.
President William McKinley
born January 29, 1843 - died September 14, 1901
President James A. Garfield born
November 19, 1831 - died September 19, 1881
James A. and Lucretia Garfield
urns - Mollie Garfield Stanley-Brown (Garfield daughter) and her husband, Joseph Stanley-Brown
President Warren G. Harding
born November 2, 1865 - died August 2, 1923
Warren G. Harding and wife, Florence Kling DeWolfe Harding
President Rutherford B. Hayes
born October 4, 1822 - died January 17, 1893
Residence of Rutherford B. Hayes
Rutherford Birchard Hayes and wife, Lucy Webb Hayes
One of our goals is to visit every presidential gravesite so we traveled through Ohio several years ago to check 5 off the list. Your photos are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteAs an Ohioan, I'm surprised at what I don't know about the graves of Ohio presidents. I'm currently reading a book on James Garfield which is eye-opening on so many levels. I saw the McKinley Memorial for the first time a year ago. Thanks for putting these sites on my radar.
