Those Places Thursday : Visit with Mark Twain

Several years ago my husband and I went on the "great adventure" west. One of the more memorable places we visited was Hannibal, Missouri. It was magical to walk the boyhood streets of Samuel Langhorne Clemens aka Mark Twain.

Becky Thatcher House - childhood home of Laura Hawkins, Mark Twain's childhood sweetheart.

Laura Hawkins (Becky Thatcher) is ready to go to a party. Her long blonde hair is carefully braided, with pink ribbons holding the ends. Her dress is dotted swiss, and pantalettes show beneath it. A flowered band is on the straw hat that dangles by a ribbon from her hand.

Perhaps she's saying to her mother, who is seated on the sofa with her knitting, "Oh Mom, the party will be ever so gay! Pamela is going to play the piano, and Sam will recite poetry, and we'll have a taffy pull---we'll have lots of fun!"

This is the foot of Cardiff Hill, made famous in Mark Twain's books, "Tom Sawyer" and "Huckleberry Finn". On the hill Tom, Huck and their gang played and roamed at will.

  1. Wow! That is delightful! I've been to his home in Connecticut, but I'd love to see where he grew up.

  2. This is a place I definitely have to visit - turns out that Samuel Clemens is a distant cousin!

  3. Thanks for the comments! It was indeed a wonderful place to visit. My husband was worried I would look for a job at the Becky Thatcher House and stay in Hannibal forever!
