While researching our Judd ancestry I discovered an article from Google Books in "Official History of the Fire Department of the City of Baltimore" concerning my great grand uncle, August Louis Eck. August was a Baltimore City Fireman in 1888 when a devastating fire broke out in a large "wholesale trade" section of the city.
During the fire August was trapped for a short period, eventually being rescued by his fellow firefighters. Tragically that day seven fireman lost their lives in the battle to save homes, businesses, and lives of Baltimore citizens.
Second reference from book:
The New York Times newspaper archives also has an article describing the fire:
Seven Firemen Killed: a fatally destructive fire in Baltimore.
We have always known there were Baltimore City Firefighters in the family tree. Without this new adventure called "genealogy", the story of August Eck may never have become part of our heritage.
