Advent Calendar - Holiday Foods
While thinking about what food tradition to discuss, a childhood memory came rushing back in full force. We had a wonderful Polish-American neighbor Mrs. Betty, who introduced us to a holiday treat called chrusciki. Must admit it took several years to even learn how to pronounce this correctly, but that never stopped us from asking when she would be making another batch.
Several weeks before Christmas Mrs. Betty would start the routine of gathering ingredients in preperation for the marathon baking that enabled her to share with the entire street. Then one year I was allowed in the kitchen to be an assistant! There was plenty of laughter, especially when powder sugar prints covered almost every surface.
Here you can find more detailed information about chrusciki along with a recipe. This particular recipe calls for vodka or whiskey, I hope Mrs. Betty left that ingredient out of her treats! That may have been the second "adult" batch she delivered to our parents after Christmas.
Happy Second Advent Day!
