Several years ago a co-worker and I toured Greenmount Cemetery in Baltimore City, Maryland. Greenmount was one of the earliest rural or garden cemeteries in the United States being established March 15, 1838. The cemetery is noted for the large number of historical figures interred, such as Johns Hopkins, Elizabeth (Betsey) Patterson Bonaparte, and John Wilkes Booth.
"Memory" - The Riggs family commissioned this sculpture by Hans Schuler in 1911.
From Greenmount Cemetery website - "William Henry Rinehart (1825-1874) was Maryland's most prominent sculptor of his generation, and his works are represented in many major museums today. A native of Carroll County, Maryland, he came to Baltimore at the age of twenty-one. Initially he was employed as an apprentice stone-cutter by Baughman and Bevan, a firm located on the site of the Peabody Institute in Mount Vernon Place. Among the first tasks assigned to him was the repair of a marble mantle in the residence of William T. Walters, whose collection would become the core of the Walters Art Museum. Deeply impressed by the young sculptor, the whiskey and railroad financier eventually became one of his principal patrons."
Nice photos. Love the statuary.

ReplyDeleteHello Deb!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Paul Svensson and I live in Sweden. I was googling some pictures when your photo of the sculpture "Memory" (by Hans Schuler) came up. I thought "that could work as a cover for a single with my band".
So, my question is - could we (our band SIR REG, celtic rock/pop/punk) use your photo for our upcoming single? It would be much appreciated.

If yes, it would only be used online as a picture on various websites. It would not go into print. We will of course send you a CD of our music, as a small token of appreciation. :)
Hugs,
