Mappy Monday - Mapping the National Parks

Grand Canyon
For several weeks I have been spending time with the Library of Congress Historical Maps collection. This week I discovered the title "Mapping the National Parks". Just a few of the maps available are Acadia National Park, Great Smokey Mountains National Park, and Yellowstone National Park. From the site we learn that Yellowstone became the first national park in 1872, but the National Park Service was not established until 1916.

The site describes the collection as the following:

"The Mapping the National Parks collection documents the history, cultural aspects and geological formations of areas that eventually became National Parks. The collection consists of approximately 200 maps dating from the 17th century to the present, reflecting early mapping of the areas that would become four National Parks, as well as the parks themselves".

Spending time with these maps you realize the sheer beauty and challenges our pioneer ancestors faced as they ventured west.
